How do you make a velveteen lop? Do you put a mini rex and EL together?
Yes and no. The idea of developing a velvet came from multiple generations of line-breeding the offsprings of EL’s and MR’s. If you just bred a EL with a MR you would not get a velvet. You would get something of btw 5-12 lbs. with anything between 3″-20″ ears and with questionable fur type. It takes 3-4 generations of mating the mixed offspring to finally get a true velvet. You continue to line breed the mixed generations in order to get a purebred. There is no need to start new EL/MR mixes as their are now purebred Velveteen lops available. If you know anything about genetics they talk about F1, F2, F3 and F4 generations. An F1 would be the offspring from a EL and MR. And F2 would be the offspring of 2 EL/MR mixes and so forth. It can be confusing. I will have to do a full post on this question!
I understand completely. Thank you for the information. I have one friend who has true Velveteen Lops. I will message her. Thanks.
