The Rabbitry

Located in Downsville, NY, the rabbitry name is taken after my dachsund-mix puppy, Bella, who was always by my side ‘helping’ with the rabbits. My name is Kathryn and I grew up raising various breeds of rabbits through 4-H. I’ve gotten back into showing and raising rabbits after I completed graduate school. I raise English and Velveteen lops as they are truly unique and special. Both breeds can be challenging to raise. We plan on doing as many shows as possible and a limited number of breedings.

The rabbits are kept in a small climate-controlled barn with cages at least 30″ x 34″ x 24″. The rabbits are free-fed pellets as long as they show no weight gain (then they will get restricted to 1-2 cups per day depending on their size) and are given free access to hay. We get our hay from local farmers and their feed is a 16% protein from a local mill. I would like to feed Sherwood Forest Natural Rabbit food but shipping requirements currently make that not viable. Treats are given no more than once daily. These include a tablespoon of calf-manna pro, rolled oats, or fruits and veggies.

 Vision

To promote the popularity and quality of the English and Velveteen lops through responsible breeding practices and education of responsible ownership. Bella’s Bunnies values exemplary standards of type, personality, and ear in both EL’s and VL’s through development of their current stock. Bella’s Bunnies strives to be associated with excellence and integrity in their rabbits and service. Bella’s Bunnies values friendship and life-long learning and seeks to honor both of these by seeking continued advice from other breeders, associations and rabbit experts. We hope to humbly provide others with the best current knowledge regarding rabbits while continually seeking to increase the depths of our own.

Mission

Success will be measured through consistent class wins. All eligible rabbits will be ARBA registered to fully verify we meet minimum breed standards. Lops exhibiting aggressive behavior will be removed from the breeding program as personality is very important to Bella’s Bunnies. Measurable goals include reaching minimal ear lengths (and compatible widths) of +16″ in VL’s and +23″ in EL’s in all litters without sacrificing type. To attend at least 1 VL specialty show and ARBA Nationals to compete against the highest competition. To volunteer at shows, visit with therapy rabbits at local healthcare facilities (1x month), attend meetings, promote adoption from local rescues, recommend other rabbitries to interested parties whenever necessary, and to support state and national rabbit organizations.
